A Smoke and Vape Free MUHC

Fines will be imposed starting May 31, 2018

In 2015, the MUHC adopted a Smoke and Vape Free Policy which states that no smoking or vaping is permitted anywhere on hospital grounds.  

PLEASE NOTE: The policy covers tobacco, cannabis and herbal smoking or vaping.

Security guards will patrol areas where people are smoking/vaping and will fine people who are caught smoking/vaping within a 9 metre radius of every door, air intake and window that opens.

What should you do if you smoke?

To provide you with the best care, please inform your nurse.  He or she will make a note in your file.  This information will be considered in your treatment plan.

The MUHC can help you stop smoking

Inpatient services

All smokers and recent ex-smokers admitted to the MUHC and their families will be offered:

  • support to stop smoking and/or remain smoke-free while at the MUHC (includes: support programs and medication for nicotine withdrawal symptoms)
  • a post-discharge telephone follow-up program for up to six months.  This is proven to increase your chances of success. 

Outpatient services

The Smoking Cessation Clinic is available to all MUHC outpatients and their families who are smokers and recent ex-smokers. The Clinic:

  • offers specialized tobacco treatment and support 
  • requires a referral from your doctor
  • is located  in Bloc D, RC.3314 at the Glen main number is: 514 934-1934 ext. 32503

Those who smoke may decide that this is a good time to stop.  We understand that giving up smoking/vaping is difficult but we are committed to helping anyone who needs support in their effort to stop.

OTHER FREE SERVICES AVAILABLE

Your local pharmacy  

Pharmacists can prescribe the following nicotine withdrawal medications:

  • nicotine patches
  • gum
  • lozenges 

Most of these are covered by insurance plans, including RAMQ.
