The development and excellence of nursing practice rest on strong collaborations with our internal and external partners.
We work directly with academic institutions, professional orders, healthcare establishments, and community organizations to support training and research, and to share knowledge and innovation, to benefit patients and the profession.
The CN is a formal advisory body representing the voice of all nurses and licensed practical nurses at the MUHC, through the participation of its 10 elected nurse members serving on the executive committee. The CN is mandated under the Act Respecting Health Services and Social Services Governance (LGSSSS) to provide advice and recommendations to the Interdisciplinary Committee for Evaluation of Care Pathways and Clinical Organization (CIETOC) regarding the relevance and efficiency of service pathways, the distribution of clinical services, and the technical, scientific, and clinical organization of the centre. The CN is also responsible for advising the Director of Nursing on any concerns regarding the quality of nursing practices at the centre and recommending care standards and measures to assess and maintain nursing competencies.
The MUHC Licensed Practical Nurses’ Council (CIIA) is a committee of the CN composed of licensed practical nurses who wish to participate in improving care quality at the centre while maximizing the full scope of their role according to their competencies. Members of this committee join their voices with those of the elected CN members on the executive committee to ensure the Council fulfills its mandate and responsibilities.
The Nursing Succession Committee is a CN committee composed of 10 elected members — nurses and licensed practical nurses under 35 years of age with less than five years of professional experience. Its objectives are to support the integration and orientation of new nursing staff, contribute to knowledge-sharing while strengthening clinical practice, and organize professional networking activities to foster a sense of belonging within the institution and the profession. The chair of this committee sits on the executive committee of the MUHC Nurses’ Council.
Several groups collaborate within the MUHC to promote the safe use of pharmacological treatments across the organization:
- Pharmacology Committee: This committee holds ultimate responsibility for the quality of medication use at the MUHC. It monitors medication control mechanisms to ensure safety and effectiveness, maintains the drug formulary, and approves clinical documents related to medication use, such as protocols, clinical guides, standing orders, and pre-printed orders.
- Medication Safety Subcommittee: Advises the Pharmacology Committee on precautions to ensure the safe use and administration of medications. It analyzes accidents and incidents related to medication use and monitors adverse drug reactions in accordance with Vanessa’s Law. It is also responsible for managing infusion pump libraries and monitoring high-alert medications.
- Pharmacy–Nursing Committee: Oversees, analyzes, and improves the medication-use process as a whole. It acts as a single point of contact to address issues and optimize cross-functional processes related to medication management, fostering close collaboration between pharmacy and nursing teams.
