MUHC Nursing Directorate

Nursing Directorate

Welcome to the Nursing Directorate

At the heart of the MUHC, the Nursing Directorate plays a central role in the delivery of excellence in care, research and innovation. Each day, our staff combine their expertise and work together to guarantee patient- and family-centered care that is based on best practices.

Nursing is a cornerstone of the MUHC and has a major impact on the quality, safety and compassion that are hallmarks of the care provided in our hospitals.

It is with pride that we present the MUHC Nursing Directorate’s 2025-2028 Strategic Plan. This document outlines how we will continue to innovate, support our teams, and respond to the changing needs of the population.

Anchored in teamwork and innovation, the 2025-2028 Strategic Plan focuses on three strategic orientations: Excellence through collaboration, At the heart of care, and A bridge to tomorrow.

This plan will guide the evolution of nursing care at the MUHC, while at the same time strengthen the quality of patient care and support offered to families. It is designed to continuously evolve in step with innovations and the emerging needs of society, while staying aligned with the MUHC’s strategic priorities.

Professional Development

The professional development of our nursing teams is essential to meeting the challenges facing healthcare establishments. This is why we offer continuing education in various forms, as well as mentorships, preceptorships, workshops, simulations in clinical settings, and specialized certifications. Available throughout a career at the MUHC, this training supports professional growth and contributes directly to the quality of care and the clinical experience of patients and families.

This table illustrates the different types of training offered.

An orientation and integration program supports each new member of the nursing staff as they settle in, discover our organizational culture, and equip themselves with the tools they need for a safe and fulfilling practice.

This program includes: welcome days, theoretical training, targeted learning based on areas of expertise, interactive workshops, and online modules.

  • Nurse educators are present on the majority of units.
  • Clinical support with nurse educators is available by site – nights and weekends.
  • The Genesis Program supports newly-hired nursing staff after the orientation period by offering a safe space to share experiences, connect with managers, and strengthen their practice through simulations, games and case studies that are tailored to their individual needs.
  • Workshops and training opportunities are offered throughout the year to nurses and licensed practical nurses (LPN), regardless of experience level.
  • We suggest specific programs to develop skills and encourage excellence in patient care.
    • Career Pathways: Support the professional development of experienced nurses (2 years and more) who want to explore new roles in nursing care. Offering 10 specialized pathways, they encourage the development of clinical skills, autonomy and engagement.
    • Bursaries for higher education (Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate)
    • Crescendo Program for externs and nurses completing their DEC-BAC at McGill University.
    • Mentorship for new nurses with the Comité de la relève infirmière (CRI): Allows experienced nurses to share their knowledge with colleagues at the beginning of their career, while recognizing their training and skills. It supports confidence building, team integration, a positive attitude, a healthy work-life balance.

Clinical nursing practice at the MUHC

At the MUHC, clinical nursing practice continues to evolve through interdisciplinary collaboration, ongoing revision of practices, and the recognition of our staff’s expertise.

  • Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) – or Specialized Nurse Clinicians – all hold a Master’s in Nursing Science and possess key expertise in caring for patients and populations considered vulnerable and requiring complex-care. Advanced Practice Nurses support the organization, Nursing Directorate teams and frontline staff by overseeing the implementation of best practices. They also lead continuous improvement projects aimed at optimizing care, processes, and work conditions.
  • Specialized Nurse Practitioners (SNP) provide autonomous, comprehensive and patient-centered care in direct collaboration with inter-professional teams. Their practice is continuously evolving in response to clinical needs and scientific advancements. Their specialties cover: adult care (IPSSA), primary care (IPSPL), pediatric care (IPSSP), neonatology (IPSNN), and mental health (IPSSM). Their expertise means they play a key role in the continuous improvement of the quality of care and the optimization of hospital resources.
  • Nursing Consultants are essential educational resources who support the nursing teams on the units. They contribute to care quality by keeping staff informed of clinical directives, policy changes, and best practices. They play an important role in the orientation and integration of new staff on the units, and in their professional development. They use various teaching methods to provide theoretical training, they help to develop the Nursing Directorate’s orientation programs and workshops in support of professional development, and they ensure safe, high-quality patient care. They are also a clinical resource for care teams and collaborate with various network professionals and partners to review care methods and protocols.

Our clinical practices are continuously updated through the use of a rigorous peer review and approval process for documents related to clinical practice and the administration of medications. This includes policies, clinical protocols and procedures, pre-printed orders, all standing orders and clinical guidelines.

We value and recognize the skills and dedication of our nursing staff, as well as their essential contribution to the quality of care and innovation at the MUHC. This is why, each year, 12 Nursing Awards of Excellence are presented, along with articles and videos highlighting nurses who have made their mark on the MUHC.

  • Nursing Week

Each year, Nursing Week pays tribute to the contributions of all nursing staff and to the spirit of solidarity they embody. This event brings the entire nursing staff together for fun and educational activities that foster inter-professional exchanges and team building.
