Cardiac Surgery at the MUHC is one of the few programs in the world that offers complex medical and surgical cardiac care, from newborns to elderly patients. A recognized Canadian and international leader, the program has a long-standing tradition of innovation, including the use of stem cells for cardiac treatment.
Our clinical efforts are directed towards complex care and involve novel techniques for:
- Repairs of complex congenital cardiac anomalies,
- Complex valvular and aortic reconstructions with the development of new valve repair techniques,
- Assessment of the most recently introduced valve prostheses implanted either by open surgery or via minimally-invasive techniques,
- Coordinated management of heart failure as part of a multispecialty team that provides optimal medical care, artificial heart technology, and heart transplantation.
By evaluating the long-term outcomes of patients over the age of 60, the division has made important contributions to world-wide knowledge in the field. It has been a Canadian leader in the application of new treatment options for advanced heart failure patients.
The McGill Division of Cardiac Surgery is the sole provider of quaternary cardiac surgical care to McGill University’s Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé et Services Sociaux (RUISSS) territory.
