The MUHC’s Division of Thoracic and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery treats patients with malignant (cancerous) and benign (non-cancerous) conditions, including:

  • achalasia (food can’t move easily from the throat to the stomach)
  • esophagus cancer
  • gastroesophageal reflux (GERD)
  • lung cancer 
  • mesothelioma (cancer of the lining that covers organs in the chest area) 
  • paraesophageal hernia (stomach slipping up next to the esophagus) 
  • stomach cancer
