Encouraging results from the first clinical trial of an HIV immunotherapy

The results of a clinical trial published in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine offer a new hope: controlling HIV by strengthening the immune system — without the need for daily antiretroviral therapy, which can be challenging for many to maintain. Sponsored by AbbVie, this first-in-human trial was conducted by Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy and the MUHC Chronic Viral Illness Service (CVIS) research team at The Institute, as well as at ten other sites in the United States and Australia. La Presse, CBC

The importance of mammography in breast cancer screening
The importance of mammography in breast cancer screening

Mammography is a test performed to detect breast cancer at an early stage, even in the absence of symptoms. In Quebec, it is performed every two years on women aged 50 to 74 as part of the Quebec Breast Cancer Screening Program. Dr. Mélanie Thériault, head of Medical Imaging at the McGill University Health Centre, explains the reason for this procedure. “The purpose of compression is to spread the tissue out a little so that any masses or distortions in the breast are more visible on the exam.” Dr. Silma Solórzano, a radiologist specializing in breast imaging, also gives an interview on this topic. Article and Radio report

Chikungunya: a mosquito-borne virus under surveillance
Chikungunya: a mosquito-borne virus under surveillance

The virus that causes chikungunya, which can lead to joint pain and other complications, is apparently present in the New York area, as well as in Nova Scotia and Niagara. However, there have been no reported cases of local infection in Canada. At this point, there is no cause for undue concern, as the species of mosquito found here is less effective at transmitting the virus than those found in Africa, Southeast Asia, and Brazil, explains Dr. Michael Libman, a researcher at The Institute. La Presse

Equipped with infrared sensors, it will analyze the quality of hand washing in order to reduce nosocomial infections and refine prevention strategies.
