Mental Health at the MUHC

Mental Health

The Mental Health department is made up of an interdisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychologists. Our goal is to provide patient-centred care in a safe and welcoming environment that allows people living with a variety of mental illnesses to reach their full potential.

The mental health team of the MUHC serves people living in parts of the territory of the CIUSSS Centre-Ouest of Montreal, which includes parts of downtown Montreal, Westmount, Park Extension, Outremont, Plateau Mont-Royal, and Côte-des-Neiges.

Which mental health services are provided at the MUHC?

The MUHC Inpatient Program provides 24/7 hospital-based care for adults experiencing sudden and significantly worse symptoms of severe psychiatric illness.

In a safe and supportive environment, patients receive medical supervision, psychiatric treatment and therapeutic interventions aimed at stabilization and recovery

The program’s goal is to ensure safety, begin treatment, and prepare individuals for transition to less intensive levels of care such as the Day Hospital or Transitional Day Program.

Our Consultation Liaison (CL) team provides psychiatric care to patients hospitalized in medical and surgical units.

The Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Bridge Program (CLP-BP) supports patients who are being followed by teams in other parts of the MUHC for a health event but also need mental health help. After these patients are discharged from hospital, they can receive short-term psychiatric care from a nurse, nurse practitioner or psychiatrist.  Patients can be referred by the CLP-BP to first- and second-line resources. The CLP-BP can also ensure a smooth transition for patients until they are picked up in the community.

Emergency services

Our Psychiatric Emergency is located at the Montreal General Hospital

Patients presenting to the emergency department will receive emergency psychiatric care as required and then be oriented towards an appropriate service in their sector. For example, patients in our sector requiring short-term stabilization may be oriented toward the BIU, and patients requiring a longer episode of care may be oriented toward our inpatient department.

Many patients are discharged directly from the emergency department with information about community resources and a follow-up with their family doctor. Patients in our sector will be oriented towards the MUHC Outpatient Department and patients outside of our sector will be oriented towards their own sector’s outpatient department.

All referrals are made through the Mécanisme d’accès santé mentale adulte (MASMA)Patients can also self-refer to outpatient services via the MASMA and thus do not need to present to the Montreal General Hospital’s Emergency Department. Learn more about MASMA.

Outpatient services

We provide specialized and subspecialized services in our outpatient department.

First-line services can be accessed in the community (with a doctor or at a local CLSC) or directly through the MASMA.
