World Pharmacists Day

World Pharmacists Day, celebrated annually on September 25, highlights the essential role of pharmacists in healthcare systems. It emphasizes their expertise in the optimal use of medications, treatment management, and their contribution to accessible, safe, and high-quality care. This day aims to recognize their commitment, promote the profession, and inspire younger generations to take an interest in this ever-evolving career.

Marc-Alexandre Duceppe is a pharmacist in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH). After completing his Master's degree in Advanced Pharmacotherapy and his residency at the MUHC in 2013, he worked in several clinical units at the RVH and the Montreal General Hospital (MGH). Since 2020, he has been coordinating the intensive care pharmacy at the RVH, playing a key role within the care team.

"The Royal Victoria and Montreal General hospitals are pioneers in integrating pharmacists into the care team seven days a week. This continuous presence promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, optimizes treatments, and strengthens patient follow-up and continuity of care. Being present every day also helps build a relationship of trust with the team, patients, and their families. This is why I'm so proud to work at the MUHC"

In particular, Marc-Alexandre values this collaborative dynamic: “Over the years, pharmacists have earned their place. The team relies on us to adjust and optimize often complex medication treatments. We also take part in care during emergency situations, such as in the ICU. Thanks to our advanced practice agreement, we have greater autonomy, which makes our work even more rewarding.”

A notable fact: in the RVH Intensive Care Unit, pharmacists independently prescribe nearly 50 per cent of medications. Few hospitals can boast such integration of pharmacists into direct patient care.

Marc-Alexandre’s practice is diverse. In addition to his bedside work, he participates in the training of nursing staff as well as pharmacy and medical residents. He sits on various MUHC committees, including the Pharmacology Committee. With the support of the Pharmacy Department, he leads and collaborates on clinical research and quality improvement projects.

On this World Pharmacists Day, Marc-Alexandre's journey eloquently illustrates the dedication and expertise required to care for the most vulnerable patients. To all pharmacists: thank you for your unwavering commitment, your expertise, and your exceptional contribution to the health of our communities.
