Every instrument counts: MDRU teams at the heart of patient care

Before a medical instrument can be used on a patient, essential work must be done behind the scenes. Behind every surgical tray, every reusable device and every procedure is a team that ensures the equipment is ready, compliant and safe.

At the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), more than 100 medical device reprocessing technicians (MDRTs) carry out this work every day. Teams work across MUHC sites, with centralized units operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They support a wide range of clinical areas, from surgery and pediatrics to trauma, neurology and robotic surgery.

A process where every step counts

At every stage, MDRTs follow precise procedures, meet established standards and pay close attention to detail. This includes identifying the specific requirements of different devices, checking their condition, ensuring traceability and reporting anything that could compromise reprocessing.

But beyond the instruments and procedures, there is a team at the heart of it all. MDRTs work closely with operating rooms, care units, endoscopy services and many other clinical areas. Their work is part of a chain of care where everyone depends on one another.

Thank you to our MDRT teams

As part of Medical Device Reprocessing Technician Week, the MUHC would like to recognize everyone who carries out this essential work, often behind the scenes.

Every instrument carefully reprocessed, every tray prepared with care and every check completed with attention to detail plays a part in the same goal: providing safe care to MUHC patients.
