Cutting-edge technology in corneal surgery at Lachine Hospital
On Monday, March 23, the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) unveiled a new state-of-the-art device at Lachine Hospital: the Ziemer Z8 Femtosecond Laser, recognized as the most advanced system for corneal surgery.
It is the only laser of its kind currently available in a public hospital in Canada. Its integration marks a significant milestone for the MUHC’s cornea program, which is taking a new step forward in innovation and quality of care.
Better access for patients
This acquisition improves access to high-performance, sophisticated ophthalmic technologies within the public health system, allowing more patients to benefit from advanced treatments close to home.
“This technology allows us to place the patient truly at the center of corneal care. By combining ultra-precise imaging with customized laser delivery, we can tailor each procedure to the individual eye—making surgery safer, less invasive, and more predictable. Ultimately, this means better visual outcomes, faster recovery, and improved quality of life for our patients”, explains Dr. Guillermo Rocha, physician-in-chief, Ophthalmology at the MUHC.
Significant clinical benefits
For surgeons, this technology enables the personalization of corneal procedures. Its ability to precisely image a 500 micron cornea allows for customized planning during the laser delivery and provide treatments with a high degree of precision facilitating a tailored surgical approach.
For patients, the benefits are numerous: less invasive surgeries, faster recovery, and a reduced risk of induced astigmatism.
The role of philanthropy
The MUHC would like to thank the Whitearn Foundation, the Montreal General Hospital Foundation, the MUHC Special Funds, as well as the MUHC Foundation and the Lachine Hospital Foundation. Their commitment to innovation continues to improve the care provided to the community.
“Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors, we can bring truly transformative technology into the public healthcare system, ensuring that patients have access to the highest level of care, close to home. This innovation allows us to personalize each corneal procedure with exceptional precision, improving safety, recovery, and visual outcomes. It is a powerful example of how philanthropy directly translates into better care and better lives for our patients“, says Dr. Guillermo Rocha.
