Lachine Hospital: A Day Medicine Service in transformation

The Lachine Hospital’s Day Medicine unit will be transformed with the opening of the new building. It will be relocated to the first floor of the new pavilion, in a modernized environment that meets the highest standards of quality and safety. This new configuration will increase capacity from six stretchers, previously shared with endoscopy, to eight stretchers, now entirely dedicated to day medicine activities. These two services will therefore have their own separate spaces, paving the way for a more efficient reorganization of care.

“Beyond the number of stretchers, this change is still a major one,” points out Marie-Ève Dagneau, Nurse Manager, Lachine Hospital Ambulatory Services and Lachine and Glen Dialysis Services. “It will allow us to offer rooms that meet current standards for confidentiality and privacy.”

Marie-Ève plays a strategic role in implementing this reorganization. With more than 15 years of experience at Lachine Hospital, she has in-depth understanding of the realities on the ground. The MUHC recently awarded her an honorable mention for her exemplary leadership in driving organizational change, her ability to mobilize her teams, and her remarkable adaptability.

Rethinking space in the existing section

Relocating Day Medicine will free up space in the existing building, benefitting other services. Endoscopy will be reorganized during phase two of the project, which is scheduled to begin in 2027. New rooms will be created. One will be dedicated to an accelerated colorectal cancer-screening program. Another room will be shared with Urology to support the REZUM pilot project, an innovative technology adopted by only seven hospitals in Quebec. This expansion also provides an opportunity to review the range of services offered, particularly to further develop hematology or eventually integrate other specialties.

Towards a modernized and more accessible Day Medicine

The role of the Day Medicine Service in Lachine is being redefined. Several options are under consideration to ensure that the needs of the residents in Lachine and the West Island are well met, while optimizing care and coordinating services across the MUHC.

Local traditions

Another source of pride for the hospital is its very popular Men’s Health Day. During this annual walk-in event, men are invited to undergo urological exams, including early screening for prostate cancer.

“Lachine has the wind in its sails,” says Marie-Ève. “Thanks to the modernization project and our state-of-the-art equipment, the hospital is becoming a practice setting of choice for top specialists and for all our staff. Above all, our patients will continue to receive high-quality care in an environment that maintains the deeply human dimension that has always been the hallmark of the hospital.”
