Celebrating Nurse Practitioners Week: November 10 to 16

At the MUHC, our nurse practitioners (NPs) are essential to every mission — combining advanced clinical expertise with compassion, leadership, and teamwork to deliver exceptional care to patients and families.

What it means to be part of the MUHC

“Being part of the MUHC means being part of an institution that strives for excellence through compassionate, evidence-based and culturally sensitive care,” says Marlon Calito, Nurse Practitioner at The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute - Hospital).

“For me, it’s also about belonging to a place where world-class expertise and genuine human connection come together. Collaboration, integrity, and teamwork are at the heart of everything we do.”

A journey of growth and dedication

Marlon began his journey at the MUHC in 2014 as a nursing student at The Neuro. “From the beginning, I was immersed in a culture of safe care, learning, teamwork and dedication to patients and family care,” he says.

Since then, he’s cared for patients across several sites — The Neuro, the MGH, and the RVH.

“Again and again, I have witnessed how teamwork and a shared commitment to excellence in patient and family care form the foundation of practice at every site.”

Now, as a Nurse Practitioner at the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Clinic at The Neuro, Marlon provides urgent and relapse care, symptom management, diagnosis and treatment education, and patient support. At this leading, high-volume MS center, he works closely with MS neurologists, a neuropsychiatrist, a physiatrist, and nurse clinicians to navigate complex cases and deliver coordinated, patient-centered care. Recently, he helped establish a lumbar puncture clinic with Dr. Simon Thebault, improving access to faster MS diagnosis and earlier treatment.

A team effort across the MUHC

Across our six Montreal centres, nurse practitioners are vital partners in delivering high quality, patient-centered care. Here’s where you can find them in action:

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU): 11 NPs care for our tiniest and most fragile patients, from resuscitation at birth to advanced procedures, management of calls from the community for transportation of critically ill patients and longitudinal management during hospitalization.
  • Pediatrics: 22 NPs across subspecialties deliver care to patients with complex medical and surgical needs within the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) units and clinics, including intensive care, oncology, neurology, and more.
  • Mental Health: Three NPs specializing in mental health lead programs such as the MUSIC Program (McGill University Sexual Identity Centre), consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Bridge providing essential psychiatric care alongside a partnership with our remote northern communities.
  • Adult care: 35 NPs specializing in adult care deliver care for complex, chronic, and acute conditions across general medicine, surgical units and clinics, oncology, neuroscience, women’s health and more.

Wherever they work, our NPs lead with compassion and integrity — mentoring, teaching, and caring for patients of all ages.

Thank you to all MUHC nurse practitioners

This week — and every week — we celebrate our nurse practitioners for their dedication, expertise, and heart. Thank you for the difference you make every day in the lives of our patients and families.
