When cancer strikes teens and young adults
MUHC heroes speak to the Montreal Gazette about the Jackie Aziz Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Program for Cedars, a new initiative within the MUHC’s Cancer Care Mission intended to support the needs of AYA cancer patients. Program co-lead Virginia Lee is also the director of Cedars CanSupport and manager of MUHC Supportive and Palliative Care Program and Services, which is aimed at newly diagnosed patients aged 18 to 39. Featured in the photo above are the program’s other co-lead, Dr. Ramy Saleh, a medical oncologist at the MUHC, and nurse navigator Rachelle Dinur.
A steely determination
At the age of nine, Rita-Elinor Katz has already undergone 23 surgeries to enlarge her skull and allow her brain to grow. This is because she has Pfeiffer syndrome, a rare condition that causes the bones of the skull and face to fuse prematurely. CTV News reports on the young girl's courage with Dr. Jean-Pierre Farmer, pediatric neurosurgeon, and Dr. Mirko Gilardino, head of the Plastic Surgery Division, at the Montreal Children's Hospital.
