Mental Health at the MUHC

Mental Health

The Mental Health department is made up of an interdisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychologists. Our goal is to provide patient-centred care in a safe and welcoming environment that allows people living with a variety of mental illnesses to reach their full potential.

The mental health team of the MUHC serves people living in parts of the territory of the CIUSSS Centre-Ouest of Montreal, which includes parts of downtown Montreal, Westmount, Park Extension, Outremont, Plateau Mont-Royal, and Côte-des-Neiges.

Which mental health services are provided at the MUHC?

Our CL team provides psychiatric care to patients hospitalized on medical and surgical units.

Emergency services

Our Psychiatric Emergency is located at the Montreal General Hospital

Patients presenting to the emergency department will receive emergency psychiatric care as required and then be oriented towards an appropriate service in their sector. For example, patients in our sector requiring short-term stabilization may be oriented toward the BIU, and patients requiring a longer episode of care may be oriented toward our inpatient department.

Many patients are discharged directly from the emergency department with information about community resources and a follow-up with their family doctor. Patients in our sector will be oriented towards the MUHC Outpatient Department and patients outside of our sector will be oriented towards their own sector’s outpatient department.

All referrals are made through the Mécanisme d’accès santé mentale adulte (MASMA). Patients can also self-refer to outpatient services via the MASMA and thus do not need to present to the Montreal General Hospital’s Emergency Department. Learn more about MASMA.

Outpatient services

We provide specialized and subspecialized services in our outpatient department.

Specialized services

First-line services can be accessed in the community (with a doctor or at a local CLSC) or directly through the MASMA.
