What is the process for being placed in a public long-term care facility?

After the completion of the necessary paperwork by your social worker and medical team, your application will be reviewed by the Montreal Health Agency (Agence de la Santé et Services Sociaux de Montreal).  They will then orient you to an appropriate residence based on your care needs and preferences.  Your social worker will continue to represent you during your transition. 

How do I find a long-term care residence?

How long will I wait for my public residence?

Depending on the facility selected, the waiting time may be between several weeks and several months.

When will I find out that I am leaving for my residence?

The hospital social worker is usually notified 24-48 hours ahead of your departure and will notify you and your family accordingly.

What is a 'transit bed'?

In case of a long waiting list for your permanent residence, you may be oriented by the Montreal Health Agency to move to a transitional bed in the community.

What are the costs for public long-term placement?

The current prices are determined by the Regie d’Assurance Maladie du Quebec:

What are the options for private long-term care and how much does it cost?

There are many private options for long-term care. The following lists resources available in the Montreal:

The prices vary depending on the patient’s needs and from residence to residence.  You can expect the price for these private residences to be more than the price for the maximum public residence ($1665.30/month as of November 2011).  In general, the waiting times are shorter than for public placement.
