The MUHC Division of General Surgery is recognized internationally for advanced surgery, education and leadership.
Its areas of excellence include:
- Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) — internationally known for clinical innovation and education
- Transplantation and Hepatobiliary/Pancreatic (HBP) surgery. The HPB program is closely related to organ transplantation, playing a leadership role in the MUHC oncology program for both primary and spreading cancer. It is an important international research partner. The division performs kidney (including living-related), pancreas, and liver transplantation.
- Bariatric Surgery: Our bariatric surgery team offers all the proven methods of weight-reducing surgery and is currently evaluating the outcomes of these procedures in terms of weight loss, obesity-related complications, and diabetes.
- The non-GI (Gastro-Intestinal) Surgical Oncology program provides multidisciplinary care for breast cancer and melanoma
- Colorectal surgery is the principal partner of Gastroenterology, supporting the GI-cancer and Inflammatory bowel disease programs.
Education
General surgery provides the fundamental educational component upon which all surgical programs are based. Medical students and core surgery residents acquire surgical knowledge and technical skills in General Surgery teaching activities and rotations.
Leadership
Many of the division’s members occupy leadership roles in provincial, national and international professional societies, and have authored landmark articles and chapters in major surgical textbooks in their field.
The annual Academic Days and the unique Surgeon-Scientist Program have helped foster a culture of research, resulting in sustained high-quality scientific publications. Thus, the division plays a unique and critical role by partnering with a wide variety of MUHC departments.

The MUHC General Surgery Division has shown the way in providing:
- Colorectal equipment in the newly renovated Digestive Endoscopy Unit
- Creating and supporting a prize-winning Electronic Health Record system for HPB/Transplantation
- Establishing a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Centre
- Designing and evaluating innovative technology in a suite of the most advanced minimally invasive Operating Rooms in North America.
