The Neuromodulation Unit at the MUHC: rTMS

We specialize in delivering a safe and effective treatment, called repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or rTMS, for various psychiatric and neurological conditions. rTMS therapy has been extensively validated in clinical trials and medical research studies, and was approved for use in Canada in 2002.

We have had several research studies approved looking at the benefits of rTMS in a variety of disorders.

We are also offering this approach  to patients who suffer from disorders for which rTMS is a recognized 2nd and 3rd line treatment.

This service is covered by RAMQ

With rTMS, cerebral electrical activity is influenced by a targeted, pulsed magnetic field. It is a noninvasive procedure that does not require anaesthesia.

Depending on the patient being treated, rTMS therapy involves approximately 20 to 30 treatment sessions, each lasting 30-60 minutes. Treatment occurs over a period of four to six consecutive weeks.

Our goals:
  • Improve the patient's quality of life.
  • Provide information needed to make informed decisions.
  • Provide a supportive and comfortable treatment environment.
  • Offer the best possible care, follow recommended guidelines from the ISTS (International Society for Transcranial Stimulation), and follow recommendations of the MUHC Research Ethics Board.
