Normand Rinfret, Director General and CEO of the MUHC, was interviewed this week for the Global Morning #AskMUHC segment. Following the relocation of the Royal Victoria Hospital, which took place last Sunday, Mr. Rinfret described the new MUHC and what patients can expect when they arrive. A chapter in the history of the MUHC closes and another begins
Last Sunday, the Royal Victoria Hospital relocated to the Glen site, concluding an important chapter in the history of the MUHC. The Royal Victoria Hospital closed its doors after 122 years of history and 154 patients were transferred to the new facility. An article in LaPresse recounts this historic event which took place without a hitch thanks the exemplary planning and the teamwork of more than 2,500 employees and volunteers.
A special bus route for the Glen site
From May 11, a bus route will serve the new Glen site from the Lionel-Groulx metro station, announced earlier this week in the Journal Métro. This route will allow people with disabilities to go to the hospital and serve as a temporary solution while the construction of the underground tunnel connecting the MUHC is completed.
Patients and medical teams rapidly settle into their new environment
Following the historic move of the Royal Victoria Hospital last weekend, many of the local media were eager to tour the new hospital and talk to patients and staff about the new environment. Global TV were invited to talk to cancer patient Audrey L’Espérance, and several of her nurses, who talked about how thrilled they are to be settling in at the new Glen hospital.
The Glen site of the MUHC ramps-up care
The post-move plan was always to gradually ramp-up capacity at the Glen site of the MUHC, which was considered the best strategy for patient safety, and followed the advice of many other hospitals that had undergone relocations. As such, the operating rooms were looking to move from emergency cases only, including elective surgeries as well by the end of the first week. The birthing centre had reached nearly 40 births by the fifth day, and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff was looking to increase the number of patients in their care. The Montreal Gazette was given exclusive access for a tour of the facility.
The MUHC and RI-MUHC chosen as two of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People in 2015
