Access to the Glen made easier
As of June 18. 2015, the underground tunnel connecting the MUHC’s Glen site to the Vendôme intermodal station has opened, offering patients, visitors and personnel a quicker and safer way to access the hospital. Beginning on the AMT commuter train side of Vendôme station, the 35 meter tunnel takes pedestrians underneath the rail tracks to the Glen side, and leads directly onto the main plaza of the hospital.
With five thousand people expected to use the tunnel daily, the STM has also taken measures to improve traffic flow in the Vendome station by adding stairs, reorganizing booths, and widening the existing passageways.
Though the Glen portion of the tunnel comes equipped with an elevator for persons of reduced mobility, the STM and AMT side is only accessible via stairs. Plans to build a second entrance have now been adopted as part of the 2014-2024 Quebec Infrastructure Program plan. This second entrance will provide a universally accessible link complete with elevators for metro and commuter train users as well as for Glen site employees, patients and visitors.
In the meantime, the MUHC encourages patients of reduced mobility to use the STM’s new 77 bus route, which leaves from Lionel-Groulx metro station and drops users directly at the front entrance of the hospital. There are also three designated main entrance stops at the Glen site for Transport adapté users: the Royal Victoria, the Montréal Children’s and the Cedars Cancer Centre.
In total, the City of Montreal, the Ministère des transports du Québec (MTQ), and the MUHC have invested $90M to improve local infrastructure and the surrounding network of highway systems in order to provide appropriate access to the Glen site.
Getting to the Glen via public transit
By bus: The new 77 bus route drops users directly from Lionel-Groulx station to the front doors of the Glen. Additionally, there are six local buses that stop at Vendôme Metro (37, 90, 102, 104, 105, 124) and five that make frequent stops near the Glen site (17, 63, 78, 371, 420). People with reduced mobility looking to access the Glen site can use these regular bus services, as all vehicles are equipped with a ramp for boarding. They can also contact Transport adapté, which provides door-to-door paratransit service and three stops at the Glen (MCH, RVH and CCC).
By metro: Located on the Orange Line, Vendôme metro station is a quick ride from the Blue and Green lines, and conveniently situated right next to the Glen site which is now accessible via an underground tunnel.
By commuter trains: Vendôme intermodal station also connects to three commuter AMT train lines, ensuring that residents and employees from outside Montreal are able to reach our facilities.
