New peer support program to help families of children with multiple disabilities
Starting in January 2027, parents of children with multiple disabilities followed by the Complex Care Division at the Montreal Children’s Hospital will have access to additional support during their hospital appointments through a new pilot project developed in collaboration with L’Étoile de Pacho.
Pacho is the nickname of David, the son of Nathalie, the organization’s founder. David, who has multiple disabilities, was given the nickname at birth because he looked like a “Pacho” (a little Mexican dad). The nickname stuck for several years.
This peer support program is based on shared experiences and mutual support among parents. Through this initiative, families will be accompanied during hospital appointments by a family caregiver from L’Étoile de Pacho who understands the realities of raising a child with multiple disabilities and can offer a caring presence and a listening ear.
By fostering connections between people facing similar challenges, the initiative aims to complement the support provided by care teams and help parents navigate their journey.
Launch event on November 4
Members of the hospital community are invited to celebrate the launch of this pilot project on November 4, 2026, from noon to 1 p.m., in the P.K. Subban Atrium at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
The event will be an opportunity to learn more about the initiative and the role peer support can play in helping families of children with multiple disabilities.
