Celebrating World Organ Donor Day
On World Organ Donor Day, we celebrate the dedicated and collaborative team at the MUHC who works tirelessly to make organ and tissue donation possible, offering hope to those in need of life-saving transplants.
A collaborative team
At the heart of the organ donation and transplantation process is a large, specialized team. This includes transplant surgeons, nurses, clinicians, respiratory therapists, ICU and OR staff, transplant coordinators, and the blood bank. This team meticulously coordinates donor evaluation and procurement—whether from living or deceased donors—in partnership with Transplant Québec.
The collaborative efforts of the entire team ensure that each step runs smoothly, allowing both donors and recipients to be treated with dignity and respect.
Living donors
Living donors are crucial to reducing wait times for those in need of a transplant. Healthy individuals can donate a kidney, offering a second chance at life to those on the waiting list.
Deceased donors
Deceased donors provide an invaluable gift, and the MUHC works closely with their families, ensuring a respectful process that honours the donor’s generosity. For those who choose to become organ donors after death, it’s essential to communicate this decision to family and friends.
Ongoing support and follow-up
The MUHC offers bereavement support for donor families and ongoing care for transplant recipients and living donors. Every stage of the donation and transplantation process is supported by compassionate and skilled professionals, ensuring that the gift of life is honored to its fullest.
Through the tireless dedication of the MUHC team, organ donation offers hope and a second chance for countless individuals in need.
