MUHC Mental Health Wellness Program

Individuals suffering from severe mental illness are 2-3 times more likely to develop Metabolic Syndrome than the general population. This results in an increased risk of Cardiovascular diseases and Diabetes.

  • Metabolic Syndrome involves 3 or more of the following conditions:
  • Dyslipidemia; (ELEVATED Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels)
  • Hypertension; ( ELEVATED Blood Pressure > 130/85 )
  • Hyperglycemia; ( Elevated fasting Blood Sugar ) 
  • Obesity (waist circumference >100cm in Men or 88cm in Women)

The MUHC Mental Health Wellness Program focuses on the management of physical and mental illness for patients who are either at risk, or are suffering from metabolic syndrome. Weight and symptom management are part of a more holistic goal of improving mental and physical health 

The Mandate: 

  • Provide education about the Metabolic Syndrome and health indicators
  • Explore conditions that help or hinder health management and outcomes
  • Motivate participants to plan and maintain healthier lifestyles 

Time and Duration: 

  • Two hour sessions twice a week for 12 weeks
  • Monday and Wednesday mornings

Collaborative Interventions:

  • Experiential learning with therapeutic approaches
  • Exercise, nutrition and stress management
