Why is the MUHC spending 4.3 million dollars on art at the new Glen site if they have to make budget cuts?
The MUHC recently announced the eleven works of public art that have been chosen for the new Glen site. While the inclusion of these pieces fits well with our endeavour to create a healing environment for our patients and the community, it was also done in accordance with a mandate from the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications. The Politique d'intégration des arts à l'architecture et à l'environnement des bâtiments et des sites gouvernementaux et publics program requires all public construction projects to reserve approximately 1% of their budget for the integration of public art.
The MUHC sees this governmental obligation as an opportunity to showcase a prestigious collection of public art for all to enjoy. As such, the MUHC selected eleven local artists whose work not only serves to showcase the talent of contemporary Quebecois artists, but also contributes to the local economy by employing a community of welders, technicians, engineers, construction workers and artists who make their livelihood from public art production. The details of the artworks can be found here: www.muhc.ca/muhc-heritage/Glenpublicart.
