Observerships

The MUHC offers students interested in observing our healthcare professionals in various departments and services the opportunity to complete an observation internship.

An observation period is a visit approved by the directors of the MUHC's Education and Simulation Directorate and Professional Services Directorate. Candidates who are admitted to the program may observe an MUHC healthcare professional in his or her clinical environment, in order to gain knowledge and exchange ideas at a professional level based on observation.

An observation placement does not involve direct clinical care. This means there is:

  • no hands-on clinical care
  • no patient interaction
  • no access to restricted areas within clinical units
  • no access to computer applications (OACIS, MedUrge, etc.)
  • no chart review
  • no research work

Applications for an observation period are only approved if the candidate meets the MUHC's requirements.

Duration: 1 day to 3 months (All requests for an observation period of longer than 3 months must be approved by the MUHC Education and Simulation Directorate.)

Treatment delay: 4 to 6 weeks (If the start date is less than 4 weeks away from the request date, the observation request will be automatically refused.)
