Breastfeeding
The MUHC respects the World Health Organization Baby Friendly Initiative to implement practices that promote, protect and support breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they have accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large. Colostrum, the yellowish, sticky breast milk produced at the end of pregnancy, is recommended by WHO as the perfect food for the newborn, and feeding should be initiated within the first hour after birth. Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to 2 years of age or beyond.
With this goal in mind:
- We encourage you to attend Prenatal Breastfeeding Information Sessions for mothers and support partners to prepare them for achieving the best start for successful breastfeeding. Register by emailing [email protected]. (Only available to patients who are followed at the MUHC Obstetrics Clinic)
- We uphold best practices of early skin-to-skin contact with your baby after birth, whenever possible, and have knowledgeable staff who will continue to assist you in your breastfeeding goals.
- There is also a Breastfeeding Support Service with lactation consultants who will be available for consultation in special circumstances of difficult breastfeeding initiation.
- Professional teaching and support is available to all patients.
- Although the MUHC promotes the benefits of breastfeeding, it respects the personal choice of women to breastfeed or not.
