- The word nephrology comes from the Greek words nephros (kidney) and logos (study).
- The kidneys are vital organs that perform two functions: excretory and hormonal. Several symptoms can indicate poor kidney function: a significant decrease in urine volume, abundance of urine, the presence of blood or protein in the urine, disturbances in blood composition, etc.
- In addition to the diseases directly affecting the kidneys, systemic diseases such as diabetes can also damage the kidneys.
The Nephrology Division at the MUHC provides patient care and teaching and conducts research, in various aspects of the pathophysiology and treatment of kidney disease.
The Division operates:
- three dialysis centres, which at any given time care for approximately 300 patients (three shifts, six days per week)
- an active home dialysis unit which at any given time cares for approximately 40 patients
- a busy kidney transplant program with approximately 100 transplants performed annually, and 700 patients with kidney transplants managed in the outpatient clinic.
