MUHC conducts first islet cell transplant in Quebec

After a decade of research, a team of physicians at the MUHC have conducted the first islet cell transplant in Quebec, which is an innovative and non-invasive treatment for type 1 diabetes which leads to live without insulin injections. Dr. Steven Paraskevas, Director of the Pancreas and Islet Transplant Program, Dr. Benoît Gallix, Director of Radiology at the MUHC and Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at McGill University and patient Zohra Nabbus were interviewed by Montreal Gazette, CTV and Radio-Canada International to further discuss the advantages of this novel therapy and the Islet Transplant Program. The MUHC wants to become a center of excellence for the procedure and to create a regional network for islet cell isolation and transplantation in eastern Quebec and the northeast United States.

The unique case of a young girl in remission of HIV

An important world conference in Vancouver presented new discoveries and promising data on HIV this week. For the occasion, Dr. Jean-Pierre Routy, hematologist and researcher at the MUHC was interviewed by Radio-Canada on the case of a young 18-years-old French women who was infected with HIV during her mother’s pregnancy and is now in remission for several years even though she wasn’t taking any medication.
