The Gouvernement du Québec authorizes the study of the Montreal General Hospital modernization project

Montréal, July 26, 2018 – The Minister of Health and Social Services, Gaétan Barrette, today announced that the Montreal General Hospital modernization project is included in the Québec Infrastructure Plan (QIP) as a "project under study", allowing the startup of the studies required and the production of its opportunity file.

The purpose of the project is to make the work spaces more functional and modern and meet the public's growing needs, while complying with the most recent safety, prevention and infection control standards.  The work that will be performed will give priority to modernizing the operating rooms, the Medical Device Reprocessing Unit and the Emergency Department.  The studies will make it possible to determine the other sectors of activity that will benefit from improvements.

Highlights:

• The overall cost of the Montreal General Hospital modernization project is currently estimated at a maximum of $300 million.  An amount of $2 million is projected to conduct all the required studies and produce the opportunity file. The Montreal General Hospital Foundation intends to allocate $30 million to carry out this project.

• At the end of the work, the Montreal General Hospital will offer a range of exclusive services, such as tertiary traumatology, psychiatry/mental health, orthopedics and geriatrics.  It is one of the three tertiary trauma care centres for adults in Québec and the only one in downtown Montréal. Every year, it receives some 10,000 trauma victims, more than 1,500 of whom have serious injuries requiring intensive care, in the operating room or in rehabilitation.   

• The modernization project is in line with the reorganization of the past few years, with the aim of enabling the McGill University Health Centre to combine its activities optimally at two distinct sites, the Glen Hospital Campus and the Montreal General Hospital.
