MUHC-wide barbecue kicks off 'Legacy Year'

Staff from across all sites of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) gathered on May 23 to kick off the hospital’s Legacy Year. The events launched a year of activities that will pay tribute to the colourful history of the MUHC’s founding hospitals and culminate in the official inauguration of the new Glen site next summer.

“As proud Montrealers, we are very much looking forward to commemorating our past and celebrating our future with the community,” said Normand Rinfret, director general and CEO of the MUHC. “Our reputation of excellence is built on the long and rich history of our founding hospitals. Today all six of our sites are experiencing a major transformation, including the inauguration of a modern state-of-the art new hospital.  These profound changes across the MUHC will allow us to put our emphasis on highly specialized care, research and teaching that will benefit Montrealers first and foremost, as well as the entire province of Quebec, for generations to come.”

The theme of the Legacy Year and the new hospital inauguration is 'MUHC loves MTL' which expresses the hospital’s emotional connection to the community it serves. It also reflects the MUHC’s commitment to Montreal - yesterday, today and in the future.

“The MUHC and its founding hospitals have been an important part of Montreal since their inception,” said Drs. Richard and Sylvia Cruess, co-chairs of the Legacy Committee. “Throughout our history we have continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of our community in order to provide the best in health care, research and teaching. At this major milestone we feel it is important to remember our roots as we prepare to celebrate our bright future with all Montrealers.”

A weekend of celebrations

This year, as we honour the achievements of each MUHC hospital, we will build momentum to June 2015 when the inauguration of the new hospital will take place. The festivities begin on Friday, June 19, 2015 with a staff celebration and a meal served by senior management and community leaders to thank employees for their efforts during the planning, development, transition and move to the Glen.

The following day, thousands of people, including patients, staff and celebrities, will participate in a fundraising march to the new hospital to show their pride in their city and attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Government officials will be in attendance, along with the Governor General of Canada.  Evenko will host a free outdoor concert to cap off this historic occasion.

The events conclude on Sunday, June 21, 2015 with a free Community Festival featuring live concerts on the Evenko Stage, a charity ball hockey tournament, cultural performances and a kids zone.
