New March Break program empowers teen patients approaching adulthood
The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) is offering teenagers a unique way to spend March Break this year. Youths can sign up for Horizons Week: a free, 5-day, in-person workshop designed for adolescents navigating health challenges and life transitions.

Core skills to help teens
Offered by the MCH’s Pediatric-Adult Transition Hub (PATH-ETAP), Horizons Week is designed to support participants as they move toward adulthood — within the healthcare system and in life in general.
“Adolescence is a critical period for building independence, identity, and self-advocacy skills. For teens with health challenges, these transitions can be especially complex,” explains Mai Christine Nguyen, Occupational Therapist and Transition Consultant with PATH-ETAP.
Supporting adolescents as they move toward greater independence
Interactive group sessions throughout the week will explore topics, including:
- understanding and communicating health needs
- speaking up for oneself in the healthcare system and other areas of life
- moving from pediatric to adult care
- recognizing personal strengths and envisioning future possibilities
- learning how to approach real-world situations confidently
“Workshops like Horizons Week offer a supportive environment for teens where they can gain knowledge, build confidence, normalize their experiences, and practice skills that are essential for managing their health and navigating adult systems.”
Guidance from peers and MCH professionals
Over the 5 days, there will also be opportunities to observe healthcare workers in action at the MCH and hear from guest speakers with important insights.
“Young people who are making the transition to adulthood and adult healthcare now will share real-life experiences and advice with Horizons Week participants,” Mai Christine says. Health professionals will also be on hand to provide their perspectives and guidance.
Horizons Week will run March 2 to March 6, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The program is open to teens living in the Montreal community, with priority given to MCH patients. Space is limited. Click here for the registration form.
