The Neuro’s new temporary Neurocritical Care Unit inaugurated at the Glen site!

A major milestone for neurovascular care at the MUHC! On Friday, October 23, the Neuro’s new temporary Neurocritical Care Unit was officially inaugurated at the Glen site, in the H-pod of the Royal Victoria Hospital’s Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.

To mark this occasion, several members of the teams who contributed to the transition, such as the contingency plan committee, all the workgroups, the Neuro, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, Medical Imaging and Perioperative Services, gathered alongside Colleen Timm, Associate President and Executive Director of the MUHC, Dr. Edward Fon, Director of the Neuro, Maxime Boutin-Caron, Associate Director of the Neuro, and Georgia Niarchos, Director of Perioperative Services and Imaging Adult sites.

With the new temporary Neurocritical Care Unit now in place since Monday, October 26, clinical activities requiring a biplane angiography system, such as stroke management, have been temporarily relocated to the Glen site for approximately 12 months.

A biplane angiography system uses two X-ray cameras to simultaneously visualize blood vessels in two planes. It is used for diagnostic and interventional procedures.

After a thorough review of the various options, it was determined that the most appropriate solution was to temporarily relocate certain activities to the Glen site during the installation of the new biplane system at The Neuro.

This solution helps limit costs, disruptions and the risk of service interruptions while maintaining the MUHC’s neurovascular program. Throughout the project, some services will continue to be provided at The Neuro to ensure continuity of clinical activities.

This transition requires significant adjustments to clinical pathways, the roles of several teams and certain work processes. Patient safety remains our top priority, and we have developed a comprehensive transition plan to support teams and maintain safe, high-quality care throughout this period.

Thank you to the many MUHC teams whose dedication and collaboration are making this possible.

Here are a few highlights from the inauguration!
