International Day for Biodiversity 2025

The United Nations established World Biodiversity Day on May 22, 1993, and it has been celebrated every year since the year 2000. This global campaign aims to raise public awareness of the wealth of plant and animal species on Earth, and contribute to a better understanding of the role biodiversity plays in the health of our planet and all its inhabitants.

The MUHC is proud to mark World Biodiversity Day through these concrete actions:

  • Signing a letter of commitment and support to the Campus Biodiversity Network
  • Participating in a Bioblitz, which will enable us to inventory and document as many plant and animal species as possible on the Glen site.
  • By taking part in the Dandelion Challenge (https://defipissenlits.ca/), which is an initiative encouraging people to delay mowing their lawns to help pollinators in the spring.
  • By introducing vegetarian dishes to the MUHC cafeteria menu, Food Services is contributing to our commitment, since the production of plant proteins has less impact on biodiversity than the production of animal proteins such as beef.
  • By continuing to plant native species on our various sites - with the collaboration of the Friends of the MUHC and Soverdi, among others.
  • By collaborating with social economy organizations such as Polliflora or volunteers from our hospitals to plant flowers that attract pollinators and enhance the richness of the local ecosystem.
  • By sharing relevant information on biodiversity during Earth Day activities, the week of April 22 - 25.
