Housekeeping at the MUHC: an essential role to celebrate

For International Housekeeping Services Day, we’re highlighting the essential work of the teams who keep our sites clean — at the Glen, the Montreal General Hospital, The Neuro, and Lachine Hospital.
In a hospital setting, housekeeping is much more than just cleaning— it’s an invaluable part of prevention. Every day, these teams take on millions of square feet.

These professionals ensure hygiene and proper sanitary conditions throughout our facilities. Their thorough work contributes directly to reducing the risk of nosocomial infections, by eliminating pathogens present on surfaces, in patient rooms, operating rooms, and common areas. To enhance disinfection, the MUHC uses NocoSpray - a dry mist or fogging technology - and UV disinfection robots, particularly in high-risk or isolation areas.

Clean spaces also bring reassurance to patients, families, and staff. A well-maintained environment reflects the quality of care provided and builds confidence in the institution. For healthcare workers, it’s also a concrete, daily support that helps create a healthy and safe work environment.
Quality control tools, including fluorescent markers, are used to assess the environment, cleaning performance and results.

Hospital housekeeping services follows strict, specialized protocols. Teams are trained to use appropriate products, follow proven methods, and respond quickly in high-risk areas. Their vigilance is constant — even behind the scenes — to ensure every space is clean, sanitary, and safe.
Staff regularly take part in orientation sessions, online courses, and refresher training to maintain excellence in healthcare cleaning practices.

The MUHC has also launched an ambitious waste management plan and introduced several sustainable development initiatives, including mixed recycling programs, waste sorting and the introduction of LEED-certified cleaning products that are safer for people and the planet.

The collaboration between clinical teams and maintenance services is also crucial. It is a true team effort to maintain a high level of quality throughout the hospital environment.

If we want to hear less and less about the COVID-19 pandemic because it feels like it is behind us, just know that hygiene and sanitation staff remember it well. You used to wash your groceries? Now imagine the extra effort that was asked of them. It's something worth remembering.

On this Housekeeping Services Day, we warmly thank everyone who, through their quiet but essential work, contribute every day to the safety and well-being of the population. Their dedication is invaluable and deserves recognition.
