Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals: Continued excellence in 2024

Thanks to the researchers, trainees and staff at The Institute, the MUHC maintains its leadership position in the Canadian health research ecosystem

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is proud to announce that it has once again secured a top position in Research Infosource’s annual ranking of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals. For the fifth year in a row, the MUHC ranks among the top three research hospitals in the country and continues to hold the number one position in Quebec, a milestone that reflects the strength and impact of our research community. It underscores the unique ability of teams at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute) to shape the future of health through discovery that matters to us all.

This year’s ranking highlights key indicators of research intensity. It reports an average research income of nearly $463,000 per researcher in 2024, with total research spending reaching $244,792,000.

The annual Research Infosource report evaluates research hospitals across Canada using multiple indicators that demonstrate the pivotal role these institutions play in advancing innovation and strengthening the national research ecosystem. The Institute’s performance is reinforced by the essential contributions of McGill University and our foundations and by research collaborations active in 85 countries, highlighting the international reach of our work.

With more than 700 researchers and close to 1,500 trainees, The Institute remains a hub for pioneering discoveries and translational research that advances healthcare in Quebec and beyond.
