Welcoming delegates from Japan’s Institute of Healthcare Architecture

It is with great honour that we announce the recent visit of delegates from Japan’s Institute of Healthcare Architecture (JIHa), which took place last week at the Glen site. The delegates requested to tour the site for inspiration in building their own state-of-the-art hospital back home.

The delegates arrived by metro and walked the tunnel connecting the Vendôme station to the hospital. They were welcomed by Colleen Timm, Associate President and Executive Director of the MUHC, as well as Dr. Jonathan Meakins, former Chair of Surgery, and director of the RBC Art and Heritage Centre at the MUHC.

Touring the Glen site during busy daytime operations is no small feat. The tour was carefully planned beforehand with the invaluable help of Francine Robillard from Technical Services. The delegates travelled through the Glen site in three groups, led by Doreen Rafeiro, Alexandra Kirsh, and Barbara Izzard.

Over the course of an afternoon, the groups toured the adult inpatient units and Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Oncology department as well as the Operating Rooms and Radiology areas at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Thanks to Rita Larotonda, Myriam, Pierre, Olivia Vidmar, Maria Kozma, Magali Aumont, Tina Kusaian, Millie Firman, Christine Bouchard, Sara Angers and Arianne Fiouzi for taking the time to guide the tours in their respective areas.

The tour ended in the atrium at the Institute where the group took in the exhibit of Glen site photos currently on display.

“What a privilege to host architects and engineers from Japan as they seek inspiration,” expressed Dr. Jonathan Meakins. “The Glen site is currently celebrating its 10-year anniversary, and I think that this international visit reminds us that we have a lot to be proud of.”
