I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Joshua Vorstenbosch as Director of the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, MUHC and McGill University, effective September 1, 2025. I would like to sincerely thank Dr. Mirko Gilardino for his leadership of the Division between 2019-2025 through many challenges and wish him all the best.

Dr. Vorstenbosch is a surgeon-scientist who earned both his medical degree and PhD at McGill University. After Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Manitoba, he completed subspecialty training in microvascular oncologic reconstruction at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center before returning to McGill as faculty in 2020.

Clinically, Dr. Vorstenbosch specializes in complex oncologic reconstruction with a particular focus on breast reconstruction. He introduced and leads the MUHC’s surgical lymphedema program, providing advanced and innovative treatment to patients affected by this complex condition.

Dr. Vorstenbosch has embraced leadership opportunities at all levels. He is a committed educator, serving as the McGill Plastic Surgery Residency Program Director for the past two years. In this role, he implemented multiple initiatives to improve communication and culture that resulted in a positive recent accreditation decision by the Royal College.  He serves as faculty for the Canadian Plastic Surgery Review Course and has been invited to lecture internationally on reconstructive topics. Dr. Vorstenbosch is a Clinical Research Scholar for the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS) and leads a lab supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) funding, where he investigates the cellular and molecular dynamics at the tissue–implant interface, with an emphasis on peri-prosthetic inflammation, fibrosis, and carcinogenesis. He also has an active clinical research program studying surgical outcomes of breast cancer reconstruction and lymphedema surgery.  Since joining faculty in 2020, Dr. Vorstenbosch has published over 60 peer reviewed manuscripts.

I look forward to working closely with Dr. Vorstenbosch as he implements his clinical, education, research and mentorship vision for the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the MUHC and McGill University, and congratulate him on this new role.
