The TBI team sees trivial, mild simple, mild complex, moderate and severe TBIs, which all have different needs and different possible outcomes.
Traumatic brain injuries and concussions come from a blow to the head, or a violent movement of the cranium, causing a jolt to the brain.
They can be caused by a number of reasons :
- Violence
- Sports and recreational activities injuries
- Transportation accidents
- Fall
- Assaults
The professionals of the Traumatic Brain Injury Program put together a series of videos to help you and your family better understand the impact of living with a traumatic brain injury.
Our vision is to integrate the work of a well-established comprehensive clinical program, in which physicians, nurses and rehabilitation professionals work together in an interdisciplinary approach, with the research activities of various scientists in the field of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
Professionals from the following areas are involved in providing interdisiplinary care at the MUHC, as per the illustration.
Other specialties may be consulted as needed.
Our Mission:
- To provide an understanding of brain injuries for medical, rehabilitation and community resource services through research, information, prevention, education and advocacy
- To achieve excellence in translational research to alleviate the medical, psychological and social consequences of this injury through the discovery and knowledge dissemination
Our Mandate:
- To improve the functional outcome and quality of life for all patients affected by traumatic brain injury, regardless of the severity of the TBI (Mild, Moderate, Severe)
- To promote prevention in the field of head injury
- To facilitate and publish post-trauma research, education and advocacy in partnership with international, provincial and regional associations and other stakeholders
Our goals:
- To achieve excellence in translational research (fundamental, clinical, epidemiological and applied) in the field of TBI
- To meet the highest standards of scientific rigor in study design and implementation and show vigilance
- To determine the best models of short-term outcome after sustained mild, moderate or severe TBI in acute care setting.
Our objectives:
- To Integrate clinical activities into research in the field of TBI
- To Promote applied research (proximity of clinical activities) through TBI/Trauma programs
- To translate research findings into clinical interventions and practices
- To promote interdisciplinary research (researchers, clinicians, managers, etc.)
- To promote knowledge transfer into TBI domain
- To support and train upcoming researchers, including graduate and post-graduate students, etc.
- To promote expertise
- To expand the research activities to other neurotrauma domains
- Outreach
