BRA Day at the MUHC
Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst Canadian women, however only 1 in 10 will opt for breast reconstruction surgery, a procedure covered by the RAMQ. Although there are a variety of personal reasons for this choice, lack of awareness and timely access to information remains a significant problem. BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day is an annual event to educate Canadian women on reconstruction options following a mastectomy. The MUHC organized its own BRA Day event on October 19, featuring a panel of MUHC experts presenting the latest procedures in breast reconstruction followed by a question and answer period and patient testimonials. Dr. Lucie Lessard, Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the MUHC, spoke to CTV News and CJAD on why women may not be aware of reconstruction options and what may motivate them to choose this surgery.
