Three COVID-19 projects at the RI-MUHC to receive CIHR funding

A $109M fund aims to mitigate impact of the pandemic on care delivery in Canada and beyond, as well as contribute to better understanding of the disease

Three research projects at the Research Institute of the McGill University Heath Centre (RI-MUHC) are among the 139 selected for funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) COVID-19 Rapid Research Funding Opportunity, announced today. This investment will support research teams from across the country who will focus on accelerating the development, testing, and implementation of measures to mitigate the rapid spread of COVID-19 and its negative consequences on people, communities, and health systems.

In total, the following RI-MUHC projects will receive $1.173M from this funding competition:

• COVID-19 and COPD: Important knowledge gaps in subclinical pulmonary disease in the Canadian population
  Principal investigator: Jean Bourbeau, Professor, Department of Medicine, McGill University, and Senior Scientist, RI-MUHC
• Validation of rapid, molecular testing for COVID-19 and integration with TB diagnostics
  Principal investigator: Madhukar Pai, Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, McGill University; Director, McGill International TB Centre; Canada Research Chair in Epidemiology; Global Health Director, McGill Global Health Programs; and Senior scientist, RI-MUHC
• Impact of COVID-19 on Patients Receiving Hemodialysis: The Quebec Renal Network (QRN) COVID-19 Study
  Principal investigator: Rita Suri, Associate Professor, McGill University; Director, Division of Nephrology, MUHC; and Scientist, RI-MUHC
