This past weekend, the MUHC’s Department of Ophthalmology, in collaboration with the Chinese Lions' Club of Greater Montreal, held their 20th annual free eye clinic.

Under the leadership of Dr. John Chen, this year’s clinic, the first since the pandemic, was a true success, seeing a record of over 170 patients. The talented team of physicians, residents, nurses and technicians were able to help people with difficulty accessing eye care for concerns such as cataracts, glaucoma and diabetes. The Canadian Press reports that according to three new studies, COVID-19 may increase the risk of autoimmune disease. Dr. Inés Colmegna, a rheumatologist and scientist with the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at the RI-MUHC, is reassuring on the subject. She explains that several autoimmune diseases are associated with different types of viruses, but that it is very difficult to establish causal links, and that a predisposition is generally required to develop an autoimmune disease. On May 24, 2023, at the Old Mission Brewery in Montreal, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, announced investments that will further support Veterans. A total of 21 projects have been announced and Deborah Da Costa, PhD, a scientist in the Metabolic Disorders and Complications Program at the RI-MUHC, will lead one of them. She will receive $250,000 to study the importance of known and unique gender-specific factors in relation to mental health outcomes in Canadian Veteran women. Dr. Sherif Emil, director of the Harvey E.
