About the Department

Bariatric Surgery (also known as Metabolic Surgery or Weight Loss Surgery) offers surgical solutions to patients that are morbidly obese. Its services have been offered at the MUHC since the 1970s, and it currently offers laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Furthermore it provides revisional surgery for patients that have already had a bariatric procedure performed in the past.

Bariatric Surgery’s goal is to offer morbidly obese patients a wide variety of surgical options, and to offer counselling for the procedure that best suits those patients’ needs. We also offer post-surgery nutritional, psychological and medical support as required, to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The numerous benefits of surgery include:

  • resolution or improvement of diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • obstructive sleep apnea
  • arthritis, and
  • an overall healthier lifestyle.
