I am wondering why you have kept the old name of Royal Victoria. It was a good name for back then, but this is today, and it’s a new hospital.
It may be a brand new complex, but when it opens its doors in the spring of 2015, the Glen site will already offer close to 350 years of combined, renowned experience in health care.
With three of the MUHC founding hospitals moving to the Glen (the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Children’s Hospital, and the Montreal Chest Institute), we felt it was important to respect the years of experience and stellar reputations these legacy sites have built by having them each keep their proper identity within the large health care complex. This way, patients can expect the same high level of service they have grown accustomed to in a new state-of-the-art facility.
Moreover, each of these sites serves very different purposes within the Glen. While the Royal Vic cares for a range of adult illnesses and injuries, the Montreal Children’s provides pediatric care, and the Chest Institute provides more specialized care for thoracic or lung-related issues. Keeping these distinctive names helps us to further distinguish between different types of services and the different sections of the hospital in which they are offered, and facilitates navigation and wayfinding for our patients, their families and our MUHC community.
It is also an exceptional opportunity to celebrate our heritage and the contribution of these institutions to Montreal’s medical history.
