Morin"Smart soles" in shoes to help patients recover from a broken hip

 Hip fractures are one of the most common injuries sustained by the elderly population following a fall often resulting in a number of complications.  A team from the RI-MUHC led by clinician-scientist Dr. Suzanne Morin, in partnership with Greybox Solutions Inc., decided to tackle this problem by developing a rehabilitation and e-learning program using a "smart" shoe sole which connects to a tablet to provide remote monitoring and coaching. This technology will guide patients healing from hip fractures and their families through the recovery period at home. Read more about it in Digital Health and Medical Xpress

Dr. Jehane Dagher, a trauma specialist at the MGH, and Radio-Canada journalist, Isabelle Richer are working together to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a bike helmet. Last June, Richer had a near fatal bike crash causing her to fall on her head and shatter her helmet. In addition to fracturing her elbow and two vertebra, she was in a coma for several days. She has been recovering from post-concussion symptoms ever since. Watch and read the interview they gave to the Montreal Gazette.

Self-inflicted injuries amongst young female Canadians is twice as high as it was ten years ago

More and more adolescents, primarily females, are ending up in emergency rooms across Canada with self-inflicted injuries, including cuts and piercings. Doctors are noticing in that both females and males who self-inflict injuries often find it difficult to deal with stress and adapt to change. Listen to Dr. Martin Gauthier, pediatric psychiatrist at the MCH, discuss the causes of self-inflicted injury amongst adolescents on Radio-Canada.

GagnonStudy finds girls are twice as likely as boys to suffer long-term post-concussion symptoms

Dr. Isabelle Gagnon, research-clinician at the RI-MUHC and at the MCH, is a co-researcher in a study looking into post-concussion symptoms in children. This study, led by the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, looked into 3000 children in collaboration with nine emergency departments across Canada. Dr. Gagnon spoke about the results of this study on Radio-Canada’s Midi Express (Vancouver) and L'Heure de pointe (Toronto)

ParentColorectal cancer screening program

Dr. Joseé Parent, gastroenterologist at the MUHC, spoke to TVA Nouvelles about the cancer screening program set to be launched in the province of Quebec next year. Within the next 15 years, colorectal cancer is expected to be the second deadliest cancer and even surpass lung cancer.
