The condition, which affects six to 10 per cent of women, is known as tocophobia, or tokophobia, from the Greek words for childbirth, tokos, and phobos, meaning intense fear. Reducing the risk of SIDS: Should babies sleep in cardboard boxes like in Finland?Reducing the risk of SIDS: Should babies sleep in cardboard boxes like in Finland?

For the past 75 years, parents in Finland have been laying their babies to sleep in cardboard boxes. Since that time, researchers have noticed a trend: the country’s infant mortality rate has decreased significantly. “We don’t have any evidence-based or scientific studies that have looked at them in a scientific way, but their principals are certainly consistent with what’s in line with our safe sleep recommendations,” says Dr. Denis Leduc, associate professor of pediatrics at the McGill University Health Centre. Numbers are similar at the Montreal Children Hospital. “Young children won’t invent a sexual assault story”, says Franziska Baltzer, pediatrician at the Montreal Children Hospital. “In my opinion, children assaulting other children have learnt their behaviour somewhere.” Details at Radio-Canada.ca.

When Jean-Gilles Gadoury was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2014, his mother Marie-Josée Gadoury herself had trouble understanding the full extent of the issue. “My mother didn’t tell me that I had leukemia,” recalls Jean-Gilles, whom we met in January at the oncology unit of the Montréal Children Hospital. More on Jean-Gilles’ story in Le Journal de Montréal.
