Targeted lung ultrasound - new clinical expertise for ACNPs at the MUHC
Since last summer, 24 of the 73 acute care nurse practitioners (ACNPs) at the MUHC have been trained in targeted lung ultrasound thanks to a course developed by Jessica Van Tassel from the Montreal Heart Institute, in collaboration with Kenny Baptista Da Silva, ACNP at the MUHC. This spring, seven more ACNPs will complete the training, which is specifically tailored to their medical expertise and the clinical context in Quebec.
"Targeted lung ultrasound accelerates the safe management of our patients with conditions causing respiratory symptoms," explains Kenny . He emphasizes that this technique, which provides real-time results, has a major impact on the most unstable patients requiring close monitoring, as well as in units with limited access to diagnostic resources.

Thanks to this training, ACNPs can now integrate this expertise into their practice, particularly in critical care and outpatient clinics, where it helps expedite treatment prescriptions and reduce emergency admissions.
