Tips to prevent falls

With the arrival of winter, we’re seeing an increase in incidents and accidents related to slips and falls. In fact, nearly 20% of reported events during this period are attributed to slippery floors. To reduce the risk of accidents, we would like to remind everyone of the importance of being vigilant during this season.

  • Watch where you step.
  • Avoid running or walking distractedly.
  • Wear appropriate shoes.
  • Report any potential hazards immediately.

Did you know that falls are one of the most common causes of accidents, both indoors and outdoors? Be careful when stepping indoors, where entrances and surfaces can be slippery.

There are several situations that increase the risk of falls: wet residues left on the floor, clutter in corridors or around work areas, loose carpets, or reduced visibility due to poor lighting. Cables or wires lying on the floor, poorly lit stairs and uneven surfaces are also common hazards. Additionally, winter weather conditions, such as melting snow or ice, increase the risks outdoors, especially near entrances or in parking areas.

Vigilance in these situations is crucial to everyone's safety.

“Above all, preventing a fall is all about taking care of yourself. Take it slow and think about your safety,” says Rania Khenfech, Occupational Hygienist at the MUHC.
