Opening of the Intermediate Care Unit at Lachine Hospital
Last Friday, an important milestone was celebrated at Lachine Hospital: the opening of the Intermediate Care Unit on the fifth floor of the existing building. Since spring 2024, teams have been working tirelessly to plan and prepare this unit! In January 2025, the unit was opened in a temporary space on the ground floor. The new unit will now welcome its first patients. The new spaces on the fifth floor, with five beds, will allow for the full deployment of intermediate care activities.
"Of the five beds, there are two negative pressure rooms," says Stephanie Rose Di Nunzio, Nurse Manager, Emergency Department at the hospital, clearly thrilled about the opening of the unit. "We’ve worked so hard over the last few months with all the teams that it was important to mark this moment with a celebration. The clinical team, in particular, put in a lot of effort and didn’t count the hours", adds Stephanie Rose.
Benoit Cousineau, Associate Director for Emergency and Mental Health at the MUHC, was clearly pleased: “Many people were involved in the success of the intermediate care unit, from the physical facilities to the clinical teams (DSM, DSP, DSI), not to mention all the support services. Many thanks to all.”
According to Myriam Ménard, Assistant Director of the hospital and CHSLD, "The 4 beds on the ground floor were occupied the most, and this allowed for a significant decrease in inter-hospital transfers. With the opening of the unit, things will be even better! This positive development has also been reflected in the recruitment of several new nurses."
It should be noted that in 2026, the unit will move to the ground floor of the hospital expansion into brand-new, state-of-the-art facilities.
Kudos to all the teams at Lachine Hospital and the MUHC!
