The six hospitals of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) and its subsidiary, the Research Institute of the MUHC (RI-MUHC), are affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University. Their relationship is predicated on nearly 200 years of excellence and innovation in patient care, research, education, and technology assessment. Further, as a learning organization intent on producing the greatest impact, the MUHC and RI-MUHC promote reflection, openness and multi-disciplinary collaboration.

The RI-MUHC is Quebec’s largest hospital-based research institute and one of Canada’s top four. Supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec-Santé and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, amongst other granting agencies, organizations, foundations and donors, it operates with an annual budget of over $200 million. The RI-MUHC is home to 446 active members, 1,128 staff and 1,184 trainees who, with partners in 67 countries, advance basic, diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge through clinical, outcomes/evaluative and fundamental research within eight thematic programs that cover the entire child to adult lifespan.

The RI-MUHC is seeking an Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer (ED/CSO) who understands hospital-based research settings and who would welcome an exciting opportunity to help the organization achieve its potential, notably by leading and rallying stakeholders around a compelling, innovative, ethical, and inclusive vision for health care and life sciences through and beyond 2030. The ED/CSO directs and manages all research activities of the RI-MUHC, ensuring alignment with institutional and governmental priorities, policies and practices. The ED/CSO serves as an ambassador for the RI-MUHC, MUHC and McGill at home and on the international stage, and leads the development of policies, practices and investments that will underpin the achievement of organizational goals benefiting Quebecers, Canadians and people around the globe.

The ED/CSO reports to the RI-MUHC Board of Directors, is appointed by and works seamlessly with the President and Executive Director of the MUHC, and also works closely with counterparts at McGill University. As a member of the MUHC Executive Team and a Full Professor with tenure at McGill, the ED/CSO contributes to strategic planning, makes recommendations on recruitment efforts and appointments, and facilitates the integration of research within the Réseau universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (RUISSS) McGill.

As an ideal candidate, the applicant will be a strategic leader recognized for scientific accomplishment and a track record in creating an inclusive and stimulating environment where trainees and researchers at all stages of their careers can flourish. The applicant will hold a MD and/or PhD, be passionate about teaching and mentoring, and have experience in promoting the translation of research from bench to bedside to business to community.  The applicant will value the hiring, convergence and collaboration of individuals of diverse identities, experiences, ideas, and qualifications and can lead the integration of equity, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of research.

An exceptional communicator who is comfortable working in French and English, the applicant enjoys using proactive networking and team-building skills to positively influence research leadership and output within and outside the RI-MUHC. Further, the applicant can excel in complex multi-stakeholder organizations and inspire others to push the boundaries of knowledge and science in open and innovative ways thanks to a highly collaborative yet entrepreneurial leadership style.
