What led you to becoming a medical laboratory professional?

During my undergraduate studies in microbiology, I developed a strong interest in bacteriology, especially its applications in clinical settings. I continued my education in Biomedical Laboratory Technology to become a medical technologist. I love the investigative process that we do in this biology speciality to be able to find pathogenic bacteria, even though it might be mixed or hidden. Whether it's deciphering rare morphologies, unexpected test results, or isolating uncommon strains, there's always something new to learn.

As a medical technologist, I understand the crucial role we play in health care. Whether it's identifying minor infections or diagnosing severe cases like septicemia (blood poisoning by bacteria), our work directly influences patient care. Our analyses and reports provide vital information for physicians to effectively treat infections, and I take pride in being part of that process. The theme for this year’s National Medical Laboratory Week is “Behind every Patient” – a fitting description of the important role played by Medical Laboratory Professionals in the healthcare system.

Collaborating with fellow microbiologists on cases where our diagnostic assistance has made a difference in patient care is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that our efforts directly contribute to better outcomes for patients underscores the significance of our work in the healthcare landscape.

Tell us about working with your fellow medical laboratory colleagues?

It’s always a pleasure to work with people who are passionate about what they do. It creates an atmosphere where learning and sharing knowledge is encouraged.

How do you like to relax and unwind after a shift?

My favorite way to relax after a long day is to take my dog out for a walk, rain or shine! It’s the best way to unwind after a stressful day.
