Driving through Montreal to deliver gift baskets to oncology patients

Many patients diagnosed with cancer received a surprise visit and gift-basket right at their front door, thanks to a thoughtful collaboration between the Cedars Cancer Foundation, Cedars CanSupport, and Entraide Bois-de-Boulogne, a non-profit organisation in Montreal. Planning began around the month of October when Cedars CanSupport worked with MUHC oncology social workers to identify patients and families in need. They sent their list to Entraide Bois-de-Boulogne, who did the shopping according to the information provided (i.e family situation, number of children and their ages, etc.). Ten plentiful gift-baskets were delivered across the island of Montreal, spreading cheer to patients and their families during a time of the year that can feel sensitive.

Volunteers and staff from Cedars CanSupport did all the driving. President and CEO of Cedars Cancer Foundation, Mr. Jeff Shamie, was one of the drivers, warmly delivering gifts to patient’s right at home.

This delightful tradition dates back to 2016, when the program was first launched. Baskets included household essentials and non-perishable items, like cereals, cookies, pastas and soups, along with children’s gifts. Another 80 or so patients received financial support through coupons to grocery stores and shopping centres.

“This is such a generous gesture from all participants!” shares Christine Bouchard, Associate Director of the Cancer Care Mission. “It brings me such joy and pride to hear stories like these. We have such dedicated, devoted, caring people at the MUHC!”

“Whether you were a shopper, a giver, or a receiver, the smiles we saw on everybody’s faces were incredibly heartwarming,” expresses Virginia Lee, nurse manager of Supportive & Palliative Care Program and Services, and Cedars CanSupport. “This is an act of kindness that reminds us of what is important.”
